Polyester vs fiberglass exhaust media tradeoffs
Two common exhaust media families dominate the collision paint booth market: polyester pad and fiberglass roll. Both deliver acceptable overspray capture; the differences are in holding capacity, replacement frequency, cost-per-cycle, and labor profile. Choosing between them depends on the shop's volume, the labor cost of change-outs, and the booth manufacturer's spec.

Fiberglass roll / pad exhaust media. Loose fiberglass matrix that loads faster but at lower per-kit cost. Face-loading characteristic, overspray builds at the upstream face of the pad, eventually breaking through. Higher change-out frequency; lower per-kit cost. Common in independent shops where labor is in-house and the time cost of changes is absorbed.
Cost-per-cycle math. Calculate (kit cost) ÷ (cycle days) to compare. Polyester typically wins on per-cycle cost in higher-volume shops; fiberglass wins on per-cycle cost in lower-volume independent shops where the longer cycle of polyester doesn't compound enough to justify the higher kit cost.
Capture characteristics. Both media families meet collision-class capture requirements when sized to the booth and replaced on cycle. The difference isn't capture quality, it's holding capacity and cycle length.
Booth manufacturer spec. Some manufacturers default to polyester; others to fiberglass; some accept either. Check the booth's spec sheet. Don't substitute against the manufacturer recommendation without confirming the booth's exhaust-fan motor can handle the resulting pressure-drop profile.
Hybrid configurations. Some installations use polyester for the primary exhaust capture plus a downstream fiberglass secondary stage. Capacity-driven design choice for higher-throughput facilities.
