The booth arrived with a starter set of filters and a parts list from the manufacturer, and the reorder quote lands noticeably above what filter distributors charge for what looks like the same media. Is the branded product actually different? Sometimes the branded pad is a specific media the booth was engineered around; more often it is a standard product from a major filtration manufacturer, relabeled with a part number and a margin. Quick answer

Booth manufacturers do not make filter media; filtration companies do. A filter sold under a booth brand and an aftermarket equivalent are compared on the same handful of specs: face dimensions, media construction, initial efficiency, holding capacity, and flame resistance. The first two are engineering facts you can match. The third is the margin. The specs that matter. For exhaust media (paint arrestor pads, fiberglass rolls, multi-layer polyester): capture efficiency at the relevant particle sizes, holding capacity in grams of overspray per square foot before the pressure drop climbs out of range, and fire behavior. For intake media (ceiling diffusion media in a downdraft, panel filters in a crossdraft): efficiency class, downstream-side tack or lamination that prevents fiber shedding onto wet paint, and rated face velocity. Dimensions must match the frames exactly; an undersized pad bypasses air around its edges, and bypassed air carries unfiltered overspray straight to the exhaust duct.

Where equivalence goes wrong. The classic failure is matching on price and dimensions only. A bargain exhaust pad with low holding capacity reaches its terminal pressure drop early, so you change it twice as often and the per-pad saving evaporates. Worse is a pad with poor depth-loading behavior: it face-loads, chokes airflow, and pushes the booth toward positive pressure between changes. On the intake side, a cheap ceiling media that sheds fibers turns filter savings into redo labor, and redo labor is the most expensive line in any paint shop.

Cost per booth-hour, not price per pad. Suppose, purely as an illustration, a booth consumes an exhaust set every 40 operating hours on media A, and media B costs 30 percent less but loads out in 25 hours. Media B is the more expensive filter, before counting the extra change-out labor and the disposal volume. The honest comparison is (filter cost + change labor) divided by hours of service at acceptable pressure drop. Run that arithmetic on your own numbers and the cheapest carton frequently loses.

When OEM is the right answer. Some booths use proprietary geometries, unusual roll widths, or engineered media where the manufacturer's product is genuinely the reference spec. If a cross-reference cannot document equivalent efficiency and holding capacity, stay with the OEM part until it can. An aftermarket pad with a published efficiency rating that meets the requirement is fully compliant; an undocumented bargain pad leaves you unable to demonstrate compliance during an inspection even if the media is actually fine.
