Col-Met's numbered workhorses were sold to shops that intended to use them up, and mostly failed: the booths outlast the plan. An 8552 in service today has typically outlived several compressors and the brand arrangement it was bought under; Col-Met itself now operates as part of RTT. What a booth like this needs from a filter supplier is continuity: media that matches its frames regardless of what the front office of any manufacturer is called this year, and a program that keeps showing up. The steel is not the wear item on an 8552. The filters are, and they were designed to be.

How Side-Down Draft (8552) shops choose filters
Intake side. The ceiling set is diffusion media whose job is even, gentle down-flow across the full working zone. On an older working booth, the ceiling deserves more respect than it gets: sagging or patched panels create fast and slow lanes in the air column, and those lanes print onto the finish. Replace as a complete set.
Exhaust side. The paired low side banks take arrestor media, fiberglass pad or roll stock as standard, changed left and right together so the split air column stays balanced over the vehicle. Overspray concentrates at these banks by design. Since the 8552 record is not yet field-verified in our system, the first order runs through a measurement confirmation: one frame opening measured, openings counted per side, ceiling layout noted. After that it repeats without ceremony.
Second stage and AMU. Installations with a heated AMU carry a pre-filter stage protecting the burner and blower, on its own cycle. If a previous owner added second-stage media ahead of the fan, include it in the program; a forgotten second stage quietly becomes the pressure bottleneck that gets blamed on fresh arrestor.
Regulatory landscape
An older workhorse booth is held to the same rules as a new one. NESHAP 6H requires exhaust filtration operated and maintained per manufacturer recommendations with documented changes, and for a booth whose paper manual may be long gone, a standing filter program's delivery and change records are the practical substitute inspectors accept as a maintenance log. NFPA 33 concerns itself with accumulated overspray as fuel load: change both side banks before saturation and clear residue from the low plenums. OSHA 1910.94(c) requires design ventilation velocity while spraying, which loaded side banks are the usual reason for losing. Age is not a defense on any of the three; records and rhythm are.

The 8552 installed base concentrates in three places. Established collision shops where the booth went in during a past expansion and has simply never given a reason to be replaced. Fleet and municipal paint operations, where side-downdraft geometry suits trucks and equipment and capital replacement cycles are long. How do I know my booth is an 8552 and not another 8500-series model?
Check the Col-Met nameplate, typically near the control panel. The side-downdraft layout is also distinctive: full ceiling intake with exhaust banks low on both side walls and a flat, unpitted floor. If the nameplate is missing, photos of the ceiling, one side bank, and the fan section let us match the configuration before quoting.
Why replace both side exhaust banks at once if only one looks loaded?
The down-flow splits between the two banks, and it shifts toward whichever side breathes easier. One fresh bank opposite one loaded bank drags the air column, and the overspray it carries, sideways across the vehicle. Uneven visual loading is normal; asymmetric replacement is what causes problems.
The booth is decades into its life. Should I upgrade the media grade?
Often yes, on the ceiling. Modern diffusion media improves finish quality on older booths whose original spec predates current media, and the intake position has no downside to upgrading. On the exhaust side, stay within a media class the original fan handles comfortably.
What is the fastest way to get a first kit right for an old 8552?
